My last issue was, if I remember correctly, December 1986, the Brooke Shields edition. By then, the playmates were anonymous, perhaps they always had been. The pictures were arty but ultimately lifeless. I didn’t move on to harder stuff. As I said, I bought it for the articles and they didn’t interest me any more. I disposed of the boxes and boxes of paper and went on with my life.

It’s hard to believe it, but I bought Playboy magazine for about 10 years. The first edition I bought was October 1975. I was never a great fan of porn magazines, still am not, but I bought it for the articles. No, really.

I don’t remember how much it cost but it was quite expensive. I bought it off the newsagent’s shelf every month.

Part of the appeal was the american-ness of it – even though it was an english edition, with inserted UK adverts and the occasional censorship, it was still a taste of the USA.

The pattern of the magazine was always the same – news and curiosities, jokes, the interview, stories and articles, a photo shoot, perhaps with someone famous, the centerfold, lots of great technology… Also lots of sport, meant nothing to me.

I threw the first copies away, then, being the hoarder I am, kept them all. I expect they would have been worth something if I still had them.
